A Winter Smoothie Just For You!

Today the weather in Rhode Island is doing that annoying regression thing where it reminds us that we are still a couple weeks away from Spring.

Not to fear! I have the most amazing "hot" smoothie recipe with a secret (and in season) ingredient that will keep you warm and nourished while we impatiently await warmer weather.

I love hot chocolate, but loaded with milk and sugar it just makes me feel like crap. I also love smoothies. But in the winter it feels wrong to drink something so cold. (And it also just makes me feel cold). I've discovered the resolution to these white girl issues!

Ladies and gentlemen......I give you......ahem.....

The Avocado Hot Chocolate Smoothie! Adapted from Liz Moody's recipe

Handful of greens

½ Avocado (fresh or frozen)

2 Tbsp cocoa powder (or cacao if you have it!)

½ tsp vanilla

(Add ½ tsp cinnamon or chili powder for a Mexican hot cocoa flavor)

1 tbsp nut butter

Pinch salt

Add hot water or coffee for desired consistency and blend!

Ways to sweeten: 1/2 Banana, 1-2 Medjool dates, Maple Syrup, Honey, Erythritol, Monk fruit

Ways to kick it up:

Scoop of chocolate protein powder

Tbsp of chia/milled flax seed to make it extra thick

"Ew, this looks weird. Why should I drink it?"

Welp, it's warm, chocolatey, smooth and creamy, for starters. We've got greens for vitamins, avocado, seeds and nut butter for healthy fat that will keep you full and nourished instead of having a sugar crash within thirty minutes, and cocoa (or cacao) for super food stamina. Baby, this snack has it all.

I should warn you, I'm a texture gal so I enjoy using less liquid and eating this like hot pudding with a spoon. If you prefer a more foamy, lighter consistency, simply add more hot water to your blender.

I hope this brings you encouraging warmth as we impatiently wait for more sunshine and beach time.

Your faithful self care cheerleader,
